Eat – a tool for evaluating the VMware Cloud Director

When we look forward to the development of Nexte our more teeny cloud platform, understanding how the VMware Cloud Director (VCD) is used in the field, it has never been better. VMware Cloud Director (EAT) -In a lightweight script on request to help cloud providers and VCD customers, they will receive information about the deployment of VCDs and contribute data to forming future enhancements of the platform.

What is the tool for evaluating the VCD environment?

EAT is a diagnostic usefulness that metadata specific to the VCD instance. Helps you:

  • Direction of review of review including:
    • Number of organizations, pvdc, orgvdcs and network
  • Understand patterns using functions
  • Identify complex VAPP constructs (eg large vapps with multiple networks or nested components)

This tool was created to support both the provider and the teams of the VMware product in getting better visibility in how VCDs are used by the ecosystem.

What does it collect?

Eating only collects structural metadata about your deployment. This included:

  • The numbers of tenants (orgs), VDC, networks and marginal gates
  • Functions to use symptoms (eg, if you use VAP rental profiles, storage profiles or rules for affinity)
  • Summary of the most complex VAPPS for benchmark.
  • Versions and system configuration indicators

The output is Excel Live-Liveable message that allows you to:

  • Check all collection data before sharing
  • Remove or reduce anything you prefer

This is not a telemetry or automatic recording. You remain under control of what the smell is.

Which VCD versions are supported?

The EAT tool supports data collection from VCD 10.4.x, 10.5.xa 10.6.x deployment.

How to use the EAT tool

Step 1: Download and Expand

  • Download File: VCD-Assssment-Tool-1.0-release.zip
  • Upload and unpack it to one of your VMware Cloud Director cells (VCD)

Step 2: Run a script

  • Go to the Unzipped folder – VCD-ASssment-Tool-1.0
  • Make the script by running: ./eat.sh

Step 3: Find a message

  • The message will be generated in the following directory:
    /Opt/VMware/VCLOUD-Director/Data/Transfer/
  • Inside you will find a folder called with the current date and time
  • Look for a file called: evaluation reports-.zipper (The default rental would be /Opt/VMware/VCLOUD-Director/Data/Transfer/
    This zip contains an Excel message and other metadata

Step 4: Check and share the message

Optional parameters

The command line also supports the arguments. For example:

  • –VCD-URL VCD API Ending point
  • –Sueurname or -u VCD API username
  • -Password or -P VCD API password
  • -OutPut-Dir or -D Output directory for dumping zip, XLSX, JSON files (Default =/Opt/VMware/VCLOUD-Director/Data/Transmission/)
  • –Interactive Gold -I interactive mode (True/False)
